Liberty State Park is a large state park along the Upper New York Bay in the Northeast corner of New Jersey. In addition to providing much-needed green space, there are fabulous views of the Manhattan skyline from the park’s Hudson River Waterfront Walkway. It opened in 1976 to celebrate the bicentennial of the Declaration of Independence. Once a major manufacturing, shipping, and transportation hub, the area has been repurposed to provide green space and recreational facilities in the heavily developed and urban tri-state area. River Hill Art Park sign

Recently, I found myself in Livingston, NJ with some extra time on my hands so I looked up if there was anything to do in the area. During my search I came across the Essex County Riker Hill Art Park which sounded interesting. The 42 acre former Riker Hill Nike Battery Control Area NY-80 Base was sold to Essex County back in 1974 for a whopping $1. Beginning in the 80s, the buildings began to be re-purposed as studios for an artistic community. This community is known as the Riker Hill Artists and there are over thirty art studios for various art mediums. These mediums include ceramics, painting, steel sculpture, glass blowing, pottery, weaving, jewelry, and woodcarving. Continue reading

Aloha Hawai'i! Hawai'i was the first land sighted in 9 days
Aloha, Hawai’i! This was the first land we’d seen in nine days!

Our first port of call after sailing out of Ensenada, Mexico was Hawai’i. It was back in the United States, but a new state for me (visiting all 50 is on my bucket list). We were scheduled to be docked at Hilo, Hawai’i for two days and Honolulu, Hawai’i for two days for a total of four days in the state.

Apple Picking at Smith’s Orchard and Cider Mill

New York Apples

Apple seeds were brought over to New York from Europe in the 1600s. Today, New York is the second largest apple producing state in the US with many varieties grown across the state. Considering this history (and NYC’s Big Apple nickname), it’s no surprise apples were designated as the state fruit in 1976. The 20 acre orchard while Apple Picking at Smith’s Orchard

Western New York is home to many farms and orchards. Many of them welcome visitors to come to pick their own or purchase already harvested apples every fall. My husband and I usually go apple picking at Smith’s Orchard and Cider Mill each fall and get ourselves some delicious apple cider slushies. Continue reading

Having lived in Western New York my entire life, I’ve often taken all the great food in Buffalo for granted. While I enjoy my eating adventures in other places, I’m always happy to return home to eat some of my favorite dishes again. Traveling also forced me to realize that some of these delightful foods aren’t available or even known everywhere. So enjoy them when you get the chance! Continue reading

One of the highlights of our last minute trip to Costa Rica was visiting the Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica. This was something I’d read about before going and was actually part of why we wanted to head to the southeastern part of the country!

To keep my wanderlust in check, we decided to make a last minute trip to Costa Rica to celebrate our second wedding anniversary and to take advantage of the long Memorial Day weekend. With only five days, we managed to see a quite a bit and fit in some bucket list adventures. Costa Rica had been on our travel radar for some time. So when a good deal on flights arose, we jumped on it. Since the flights were in and out of the capital, San José, we decided to look to the lesser visited Caribbean coast for some laid back vibes.

Despite having lived in New York State for the first 29 years of my life (excluding when I studied abroad and my internship in the Florida Keys), I had never visited the New York State Fair. Shameful, I know. However,  I finally righted this great wrong in my life, dragging my hubby and bestie along with me. Continue reading

Where to Honeymoon?

Poky Little Wanderer's wedding ceremony
We’re married!

After living on such a tight budget for over two years saving up for the wedding, we (okay, mostly me) were itching to take a big honeymoon trip. The last big trip we’d taken was to Punta Cana for my sister’s wedding and where we’d gotten engaged. However, we decided that we’d be too exhausted after the wedding to do a big trip justice. Instead, we opted to take a mini road trip through the Florida Keys. This ended up being a fantastic choice for us: tropical, relaxing, and carefree.

Post College

Life after college saw me moving in with my parents for a few months before deciding to move to Cheektowaga, a suburb of Buffalo, to live with my then-boyfriend. If you ignore the year-long break we took during college, we’d been dating since our senior year of high school. Yet I refuse to acknowledge that we were high school sweethearts (it’s too sweet and mushy for this sarcastic cynic). Continue reading
