Language

The official language of the People’s Republic of China is Standard Mandarin Chinese. There are hundreds of other languages and related dialects spoken throughout the country, but Standard Chinese serves as the lingua franca.

Several of China’s autonomous regions have official languages in addition to Chinese. For example, in Hong Kong both Standard Chinese and English designated as official languages, but Cantonese is what most residents speak at home. Similarly in Macau, Portuguese joins Standard Chinese as the official languages with Cantonese spoken by most at home and English also being widely spoken.

Throughout the country and its regions, travelers will find many English speakers as it’s the most studied foreign language and a required course for many universities.
