Shakespeare in Delaware Park has been a Buffalo summer tradition since 1976. Since then it has grown to become one of the largest outdoor Shakespeare companies in the USA and is now the second oldest such company. Theatre students from the University at Buffalo work alongside professional actors to provide high-quality performances of the bard’s beloved plays. Each year two plays are chosen to be performed and each one runs about 3-4 weeks with performances six days a week. The outdoor performances are free to attend, which make for a great date night or a fun way to spend a summer evening with a group of friends!

Semester at Sea: Beijing and the Great Wall of China (Part 2)

Flying from Shanghai to Beijing
Fellow flying friends in the skies

My adventures in China during my Semester at Sea voyage continued as I traveled from Shanghai to Beijing.

Having successfully navigated the minor roadblock on our way to Shanghai’s airport when our taxi driver misunderstood us and took us to the zoo first, my friends and I got checked in and waited for our flight. We hung out with a large group of other Semester at Sea students who were going on the same trip. Our tour was organized by The China Guide tour company to show us the sights in Beijing and explore the Great Wall. The flight from Shanghai to Beijing was pretty uneventful, only two hours, but they did feed us dinner. This was a change for me from flights within the USA these days where they barely give you a drink and snack for much longer flights!

Continuing on our journey west across Japan, our plan was to visit Hiroshima and Nara to learn more about ancient and modern Japanese history before heading back to meet the MV Explorer in Kobe. I began my trip through Japan in Yokohama and Tokyo (which you can read about in part 1 of my Japan posts) with stops in Hakone and briefly in Kyoto (which I wrote more about in part 2 of my Japan posts).

Liberty State Park is a large state park along the Upper New York Bay in the Northeast corner of New Jersey. In addition to providing much-needed green space, there are fabulous views of the Manhattan skyline from the park’s Hudson River Waterfront Walkway. It opened in 1976 to celebrate the bicentennial of the Declaration of Independence. Once a major manufacturing, shipping, and transportation hub, the area has been repurposed to provide green space and recreational facilities in the heavily developed and urban tri-state area. River Hill Art Park sign

Recently, I found myself in Livingston, NJ with some extra time on my hands so I looked up if there was anything to do in the area. During my search I came across the Essex County Riker Hill Art Park which sounded interesting. The 42 acre former Riker Hill Nike Battery Control Area NY-80 Base was sold to Essex County back in 1974 for a whopping $1. Beginning in the 80s, the buildings began to be re-purposed as studios for an artistic community. This community is known as the Riker Hill Artists and there are over thirty art studios for various art mediums. These mediums include ceramics, painting, steel sculpture, glass blowing, pottery, weaving, jewelry, and woodcarving. Continue reading

Where to Honeymoon?

Poky Little Wanderer's wedding ceremony
We’re married!

After living on such a tight budget for over two years saving up for the wedding, we (okay, mostly me) were itching to take a big honeymoon trip. The last big trip we’d taken was to Punta Cana for my sister’s wedding and where we’d gotten engaged. However, we decided that we’d be too exhausted after the wedding to do a big trip justice. Instead, we opted to take a mini road trip through the Florida Keys. This ended up being a fantastic choice for us: tropical, relaxing, and carefree.
