Who is the Poky Little Wanderer?

I’m Kelly, aka the Poky Little Wanderer, a sassy little traveler who dreams of wandering the world and experiencing everything it has to offer.

I, along with my adorable red Doberman Pandora and my little house panther Bastet, recently moved back to Buffalo, NY after living in Baltimore, MD for the last 5 years. My full-time job sadly only allows a certain number of vacation days each year. So I try to maximize my vacation time by planning trips around weekends and holidays, as well as keeping a tight transportation schedule to avoid taking off more time than I absolutely have to.

When not traveling, I try to explore my local region and enjoy all it has to offer. In Western New York I find myself checking out the beautiful architecture found in the city of Buffalo, nearby Niagara Falls (often considered a Wonder of the World), many great restaurants, craft distilleries, breweries, and wineries.  While Maryland is full of historical sites, wonderful restaurants, new breweries, distilleries, and wineries for me to explore.

Goals of Travel

During my study abroad program, Semester at Sea, I had the pleasure of having Dr. Don Gogniat as my Global Studies professor. Throughout the semester he shared his “10 Joyful Travel Tips” with the students aboard our voyage. The first tip was to ‘Never let your age get larger than the number of placesthat you have explored.’ This has become one of the goals of my travels: to keep exploring new places as the years pass by.

I love learning and exploring, so I relish any opportunities to learn something new, whether it’s knowledge or a skill. This helps me gain a deeper appreciation of the destinations I visit and participate in more adventurous activities.

While my high school level Spanish has been sufficient to get me through some of my travels, I would love to become fluent and start learning other languages as well. During summer 2016, I took my PADI Open Water Diver course and became a certified scuba diver in preparation of my trip to Ecuador & the Galápagos Islands. Now when planning my travels, I also look into diving opportunities.

Goals of the Poky Little Wanderer Blog

One of the reasons I wanted to start this blog was to share my travels with others since I love reading about travel and know there are others who do too! My posts will include some tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way, as well as my opinions on the places I’ve gone and the things I’ve done.

As I’m rarely found without a book in hand, people are constantly asking me what I’m reading or looking for book recommendations. I’m hoping that by sharing some of my Wandering Reads, it will give people some insight on books I’ve enjoyed and found travel inspiration through. I may even try to interview authors (if I can get any to talk to me) or ask fellow readers for suggestions of books that I should read.

I’ve never been very tech savvy, so creating a website has been quite a challenge and I’ve been learning a lot of new skills. From choosing a web host to selecting the colors and layout, I have had to do a lot of research to get this up and running.

Going through all my travel pictures has led to me deciding to polish up my photography skills since realizing I was a terrible photographer. I invested in a new camera and am in the process of learning how to take better photographs. Be on the lookout for improvements in my pictures, and in the meantime you can check out my Instagram for some of my favorite pictures I’ve taken around the world.

I’m so excited to start this blog and can’t wait to see where I can take it! (Or even where it takes me!)
